So strange to listen to this, if you listen to his recordings after the administration of largactil in the early-mid 50's his technique is ruined in comparison with his early recording, but here he seems more brilliant than ever, nice to see that this great talent was not torn in pieces completely, after all.
So strange to see this. If you have listened to some of his recordings between 1955 to his death, you can hear how his technique is impaired (Probably by the anti-psycotic medication) you can also see some other videos where he seems to be struggling to keep his technique intact and how he sits in this strange and overly stiff posture at the piano. But here he is just fantastic, he plays just as dazzlingly agile as he did prior to 1954.
Bud Powell's mastery of the piano is unrivaled. Even though this is great, it is nothing compared to Bud from his Golden days (late 40's-early 50's). Listen to his Tea for Two interpretations, and you will understand how great his technique and precision was.
I think, the only one that really matches his genius, is Art Tatum, who incidentally is the precursor of Bud Powells playing. If you listen to the early Bud Powell records, you will see what I mean. He just took Art Tatum a bit further.
Yes. But being the fact Bud was told that he came from a race of people who were nothing in the early to mid 1900's, was constantly underpaid, and mistreated knowing he had a genius mind? I'd be a little on the madness side too. LOL!
Never appreciated in their own country ,if it wasn't for Europeans at the time we would never have seen these tiny snippets of these incredible musicians like bud powell
