His drums always sounded great, on every record. You can hear every nuance, every tone on every drum, every time.

I heard Buddy and his band 5 times between 1971 and 1980; each time was better than the one before. What a band!!!

I have a question: was the theme song from The Odd Couple used to make this song? It sounds pretty close. I obviously love this one much more.

Groovin' Hard was composed by the (Buffalo) New York-born saxophonist and arranger, Don Menza, who also wrote Time Check for the Buddy Rich Big Band.

Don Menza composition and arrangement, soloing here. Just saw Menza here in Buffalo last night/Oct 24/17 at age 81 with an 11 piece ensemble. Still playing like he's 51!

Is this really almost 50 years old? Man time flies... Awesome song.

In the spring of 1989 when I was a sophomore in high school, my high school jazz band went to Gatlinburg, TN for a jazz band competition, the only time my band director ever decided to do that actually. Anyway, we played a very, very similar arrangement of this. It wasn't as busy as this arrangement. I always loved the sax soli. I didn't play a snare on 2 and 4 during the melody like Buddy does here. I tried it at the suggestion of my band director but I didn't think it sounded right in my case. I just stuck to 2 and 4 on the hihat. Oh well, that's my Groovin' High story. Oh yeah, we won too!

Played this in 7th grade, and my high schools highest level band is doing it right now. I’m not in that band yet, but they are incredible to watch.

Played this in high school jazz band 73/74 and hadn't heard it in years.   When this came up, I grabbed my guitar and was surprised I still remembered the entire chart and could play along without missing a beat.

I just love where the beat sits with those exceptional tasteful fills and hits.

Rick Laird on bass. A year later he was in Mahavishnu Orchestra.

A great example of Buddy playing tastefully. I'm sick of hearing comments about how he is all flash and no feeling. He is grooving here!
