Don Menza composition and arrangement, soloing here. Just saw Menza here in Buffalo last night/Oct 24/17 at age 81 with an 11 piece ensemble. Still playing like he's 51!
In the spring of 1989 when I was a sophomore in high school, my high school jazz band went to Gatlinburg, TN for a jazz band competition, the only time my band director ever decided to do that actually. Anyway, we played a very, very similar arrangement of this. It wasn't as busy as this arrangement. I always loved the sax soli. I didn't play a snare on 2 and 4 during the melody like Buddy does here. I tried it at the suggestion of my band director but I didn't think it sounded right in my case. I just stuck to 2 and 4 on the hihat. Oh well, that's my Groovin' High story. Oh yeah, we won too!
Played this in high school jazz band 73/74 and hadn't heard it in years. When this came up, I grabbed my guitar and was surprised I still remembered the entire chart and could play along without missing a beat.
Great tune - thanks for posting!!
