While perusing the import section of the record store some 40 years ago in New Jersey, I came across a double album entitled "Canterbury Tales" by this band Caravan. Never heard of them; but the cover artwork had me so captivated, I bought the damn thing, for $4.50. Apparently it was a "greatest hits" compilation released for the US market. Within months, I had every release by the band in my possession, at great expense. The live track "For Richard" (which was the same track that later became available on "Live from Fairfield Halls), so overwhelmingly affected my abilities to focus and listen to music, that it changed my entire perspective of the art form for the rest of my life. I was no longer contained by the culturally, and corporately constructed boundaries of "Pop Music"; I could no longer be manipulated, or convinced by others, of what was "Good" music. I was finally on my own. It was the beginning of a new life of musical heaven on earth. Thank you Pye, Richard, Dave, Steve, Geoff, Mike, Jimmy, Richard(RIP) and all the other musicians who filled in the periodic voids throughout the years.

The entire song rules, of course, but Dave's solo is one of the most memorable pieces of music I've ever heard on a rock album. Sounds so simple and yet it takes you to another world. Eat that, Keith Emerson!
