Gee whiz…
Look at his eyes
Gee whiz…
How they hypnotize
He’s got everything a girl could want
Man oh man
What a prize
Uh huh
Gee whiz…
He’s all the joy
Gee whiz
I could find in a boy
He’s awful nice
It’s paradise
I hope I’m not his decoy
Heaven up above
Knows how much I love
That fellah so Angels sing
Of the love I bring
I hope our love will grow and grow
'Cause, Gee whiz…
I love that guy
Gee whiz…
My, my oh my
There are things we could do I could say I love you
But all I could say is Gee whiz…
I was reading the book "She is Evil" by Judith Yates about a true crime in Memphis. One of the people featured in the book "Bonnie" is quoted as singing this song to her family. I sort of remember hearing it years ago so I looked it up...and found this, the original recording. I love it and have played it constantly. Carla Thomas will always be remembered for this great hit!
That’s one of several Gals who are shamefully underrated
She growled, purred and was able to deliver almost anything with a superb workout!!!
Thanks!!!
I first heard this beautiful song in Feb 1978 while driving my 58 Chev- Delray into the parking lot at 5:30 am. Arriving at my job American Metal Products, man all the older guys were just admiring the cool song reminiscing(I was 21 yrs old). What a memory "frozen" in my mind forever
Gee whiz, look at his eyes
Gee whiz, how they hypnotize
He's got everything a girl could want
Man, oh, man, what a prize! Oooh ooh
Gee whiz, he's all the joy
Gee whiz, I could find in a boy
He's awful nice, its paradise
I hope I'm not he's decoy
Heaven up above knows how much
I love that gentle soul
Angels sing of a love like this
I hope our love will grow and grow
Oh, gee whiz, I love that guy
Gee whiz, my, my, oh my
There are things we could do
I could say I love you
But all I can say is...gee whiz!
The song was released by Rufus and Carla in October 1960, to not much fanfare. However, by February 1961, the song was being distributed nationally through Atlantic Records just as Thomas was in the midst of her first year at Tennessee A&I University in Nashville.
There's a great story about this recording session in Rob Bowman's "Soulsville USA: The Story of Stax Records". The session ran hours late because the guy who was supposed to write the string arrangement was up late gigging the night before and forgot about it completely. This led label head Jim Stewart to be rushing around Memphis looking for him while the musicians waited at the studio getting paid union rates plus overtime. Eventually he went back to the studio and basically told the string players to play whole notes throughout and then wing it in the bridge. Amazing. This was the first big hit for Stax Records (then Satellite Records), basically changing the fortunes of the label. Without this song, we may never have got to hear Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, William Bell, Isaac Hayes, Linda Lyndell and so many others.
This song reminds me of my husband cus he's got every thing a girl could want and that's me of course all i can say is "Gee Whiz what a guy"! I will dedicate this song to my hubby on March the 4th 2019 for our 42 year wedding anniversary.
Signature ballad...Gee Whiz , closing the grand 50's of Rock and Roll and ushering in the turbulent 60's. Carla Thomas's beautiful ballad is timeless and personal for each and everyone of us who lived it.
