I remember well this Carole King classic charting in the late summer of 1962 -- of all the songs she's ever done, this is my favorite -- and it was her first!
Why can't they write and sing songs like this now? This is so smooth and easy to listen to. I just love Carol King. Altho I think I read somewhere that she did not like this song later in her career. This song gets in your head and it just stays there which is ok with me.
This song very special to me. When it came out I was head over heels in love, 19 years old and going on holiday with my parents and younger siblings for three weeks away from the object of my affections. We married in 1966 and are still together 53 years later!
People are asking if this is an early version of the song. It is the earliest. It was the demo that she and Gerry, as songwriters, made to show how the new song should sound. It turned out so well, it was polished with expert background, and released. In fact, it has no fancy master tape.... it was only a demo. Some demo, huh ? I love it.
a fine early song from Carole King, that captures teenage angst so perfectly, melody, feeling, lyrics that engage, meaning that is understood, panorama that fits...
