I hate it when people get on and comment about the number of dislikes, but here I have to make an exception. ONE DISLIKE??? How do you not like a tune like this, done up HOT TIME by what is basically an ALL LEGEND ensemble?
To not like this you gotta be dead from the neck down.
Anyhow, Charlie is really jammin' on this one. I've been switching back and forth between this one and one called Django Reinhardt Honeysuckle Rose --Very interesting.
This was not the Metronome All Band. This was Benny Goodman's version from late 1939.I have it in my collection.Goodman cut this for Columbia after he left Victor where he had been since 1935.Ziggy Elman is the trumpet soloist;the chart is a Fletcher Henderson one.
Question: I have this on an old Benny Goodman CD from Columbia with other stuff from Goodman's 1939 band. The liner notes say the guitarist is Arnold Covey. Was this Christians birth name or are the liner notes and track personnel listing wrong? I should say that it always sounded to me like Charlie Christian.
josep I love your playing and channel, I too have been admiring charlie since I was a kid in school and these small group recordings are the most sophisticated in all of jazz the metronome all stars never recorded a dud. He charlie lets do the blues in B.
One day some kind person will write a book about the rehearsals, arrangements, musicians comments, number of takes - before the actual performance and then leave this so wonderful music for eternity. For example: from 2:14 , except for 4 bars, I can't recognize 'Honeysuckle Rose. Is this an improvisation on the main theme? There are now some DVDs, such as Grappelli in the recording studio with Claude Bolling, mishaps, musicans' expressions appreciating moments of genius - just being there....
