Hauntingly beautiful with Bird at his artful best on this great ballad. I must also complement the trombone for a very tender rending of the melody 4 Stars!
The strongest "Autumn in New York" for me is the Dexter Gordon version in Round Midnight movie where the french guy sings the words for him and then Dex gets the groove...
I grew up in NYC but I haven't lived there in years. Every time I hear this song it conjures up sweet melancholy feelings. How warmly recall those cool evenings when red and brown leaves were blown away, like so many memories of summers pasted. It seems to me that Charlie Parker rides that lush orchestral arrangement as naturally as the leaves of my youth rode those autumn breezes. Many thanks for the posting.
I was just an infant, when Charlie Parker, was playing. I started listening to his music, the past few years recently. He was a genius, as well as a Jazz Musician.
I try to listen to this but it's hard. My older siblings who introduced this to my sister and I are gone now. We were little girls and would wait until the guys went to work, Dad was at work and mom in the living room....and we'd sneak and listen to this, careful not to 'scratch' the 78. I'm dating myself but we were really little and in love with beautiful sounds that defines us until this day. genius. I love it. ; )
