George Martin----a real British gentleman, and Cilla Black-----a well mannered young lassie with an amazing voice. I love how they both pay their respects to each other at the end of the song.
As a drummer, singer, and performer, this clip has absolutely floored me!!! I'm a goner! :-) The orchestra, conducted here LIVE, and Cilla's execution of this song live is an oil painting! It is a brilliant song to begin with, and the performance here is astounding! Whewwwww!
I love how she doesn't allow the orchestra, despite their best efforts, to push the tempo on this song....requires precise timing and superior breath support.
My God. the sheer vulnerability. This is a girl who loves unconditionally and all she wants is to be loved in return, and feels the pain of being scorned. Cilla truly sells it.
Considering that this was a TV show in London 5-1-66 the fidelity is excellent. The first time I viewed it I assumed it was lip-sync because the music was so good. Then you see the orchestra of George Martin. See more of them when you watch her other song in this performance. Not bad for a girl who was the coat check girl at the Cavern in Liverpool. Glad her talent did not remain hidden.
Cilla has ripped away the veil of artificial pretence. There is a raw nakedness displaying a level of emotion and sincerity that is both powerful and unique....elevating this performance to the status of a genuine classic.
Today's pop stars cannot get near to this raw talent , no boob jobs , no media spin. No sexy looks or wardrobe. No simon cowell , just raw vocal talent with no auto cue . RIP cilla
Cilla was no oil painting, but my God she was once up there fearlessly punching above her weight with that gorgeous voice and perfect song, and that’s all she needed to gain huge admiration and respect. Today’s useless pop ‘star’ lightweights need Dutch courage just to open their mouths and show their whitened teeth live on stage never mind Wow the audience like this.
