No, no, no! Barbarian is Greek. It refers to the fact that they deemed Greek to be the only language that had any meaning, and everyone else's talking was just going "bar bar bar bar", ie. gibberish :)

Yes,this is the explanation I've heard too. I have also heard "barbarians" refers to beards. The Romans were clean shaven and these bearded men would have seemed wild and outlandish to them.

I'm simply stating the etymological origin of the word Barbarian. It's a racist term coined by the ancient Greeks thousands of years ago. The inverse of this, of course is, "It's all Greek to me", meaning something is gibberish.
