Everybody tried a lot of something nice.... No one took their eyes off Lorraine!
God bless, the bass guitar just smokes on this song too. Great stuff. Hope you are all enjoying it as much as meeeeee.........:)
I've always thought Mick Ronson truly deserved far, far more credit to the success and the legacy of what was created , than it got. While Bowie had the vision and creativity, Ronno's glue, made for me, at least some of the most memorable music Iv'e ever heard, especially this one. R.I.P. Trailblazers.
Shakey threw a party
that lasted all night
Everybody drank a lot of something nice
There was an old fashioned band
of married men
Looking up to me
for encouragement
- it was so-so
The ladies looked bad
but the music was sad
No one took their eyes off Lorraine
She shimmered and she strolled like a Chicago moll
Her feathers looked better and better
- it was so-so
Yea! it was time to unfreeze
When the Reverend Alabaster danced on his knees
Slam! so it wasn't a game
Cracking all the mirrors in shame
[CHORUS]
Watch that man! Oh honey, watch that man
He talks like a jerk but he could eat you with a fork and
spoon
Watch that man! Oh honey, watch that man
He walks like a jerk
But he's only taking care of the room
Must be in tune
A Benny Goodman fan painted holes in his hands
So Shakey hung him up to dry
The pundits were joking
the manholes were smoking
And every bottle battled
with the reason why
The girl on the phone wouldn't leave me alone
A throw back from someone's LP
A lemon in a bag played
the Tiger Rag
And the bodies on the screen stopped bleeding
Yeah! I was shaking like a leaf
For I couldn't understand the conversation
Yeah! I ran to the street, looking for information
[CHORUS]
Watch that man [repeat ad inf.]
This guy called Bowie had it all and then more
I shed a tear when the news came out and said that he had died ,there is not to many greats left but Bowie was up there ,Sad .
This album will always be special to me as it was my first album experience. Nothing quite like reliving the moment this song burst through my headphones a few years ago and the rest of the album followed of course. There will never be another like him
As I listen to "Watch That Man", I keep expecting to hear; "....As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent....".Cracked Actor gives me similar flashbacks to Diamond Dogs tunes, which was my first, and still favorite Bowie album I ever discovered as a kid.
You need to remember the time period when this was recorded and mixed. It was a "coke" session. Up is louder. Worked on many of them. Some mixers actually had the good manners to return the next day and listen again-sober. And the re-mixing begins....
Bowie and Ronson were amazing. I was only 1 when this was released so didn't get the chance to boogie with Lorraine who looked like a Chicago moll. I love that whole Bowie/Warhol/Edie Segwick decadence of the time....amazing
