I asked Jeannie out in high school in 1977, joined the Air Force, was stationed at the same base her father was, married Jeannie in May 1980 (the same month and year this song was released) and we celebrate 36 years together this May. I request this song at every party and wedding, and it still brings tears to my eyes. I tell folks that I had Elton write it for us.
When I was dating her, my song for her was "Your Song", with the same stated origin.
