I agree with pianiplunker's (love that name!) entry - though not much slower. The four pianists mentioned play his music beautifully, also. Thanks for the posting.
Very interesting composer. Unfortunately, rather ignored by the big european broadcasters, almost never played in Germany, where I live, only musiq3 in Belgium covers him. Pride of catalonia, along with Cassado!
Generally Mompou plays his music slower than Delarocha, Michelangeli, Hough or Novaes. There's completely no ego in Mompou's playing which I find very refreshing.
Although I adore this music, there's something I cannot understand about Mompou's way of playing the piano: the right hand seems always to have a late attack during chords and parts enterings. If you see the "A fondo" episode about him, you can see him playing the first song/dance in this very way too. My question is: is this his style of playing or was it due to other reasons? If someone can shed light on this, quoting some critical sources preferably, I would really be grateful.
Your comment is interesting- there is indeed an element of ego in performances that miss the mark. But give the composer the credit due because he knows better his dream than anyone else, and besides, he was of an older generation and earlier time when life was slower and people took the time to live. The last few decades have seen the emergence of a frantic lifestyle in the industrial world that has taken the true character out of classical music performances.
