All this talk of blood and iron
Is the cause of all my shaking
The fatherlands no place to die for
It makes me want to run out shouting
I hear some talk of guns and butter
That’s something I can do without
If men are only blood and iron
O Doktor Doktor, what’s in my shirt?
Just keep quiet no room for doubt
I’m hearing talk of joy in labour
That’s a thing I can do without
The motherland is no place to cry for
I’ll find some sand to hide my head in
All this talk of strength through labour
I’ll tell you this you can leave me out
If I’m only blood and iron
O Doktor Doktor, what’s in my shirt
Excellent comment TomatoNanny. Oh and I like your DP. I recoginize that character: the one and only Patrick Bateman. It's just that American Psycho is a big obsession of mine
For anyone that doesn't know, in context, the Nazi Party had a butter v guns debate in the lead-up to World War Two. Conservative economist Hjalmar Schacht was the 'butter' side of the debate in that he wanted Germany's economic self-sufficiency to be defined through consumer goods. Nazi general Hermann Goering thought rearmament was better.
Everyone who loves this album as much as I do is strongly encouraged to read the 33 1/2 book that details every aspect of the recording. Added many additional layers of enjoyment to an already enthralling listen.
