Here in my car
I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It’s the only way to live
In cars
Here in my car
I can hardly receive
I can listen to you
It keeps me stable for days
In cars
Here in my car
Where the image breaks down
Will you visit me please
If I open my door
In cars
Here in my car
You know I’ve started to think
About leaving tonight
Although nothing seems right
In cars
It's amazing how even by 2020 standards this still sounds "futuristic" like it did in the late 70s and early 80s. Imagine yourself listening to this track in the far future while driving in a 'flying car' in a dark gloomy industrial, bleak, disgusting, run down technological dominate dystopian city. It's a perfect atmosphere. Numan and most of the acts of the New wave and synth-pop movement was way ahead of its time.
My dad passed away a few days ago and his last days he spent a lot of time in his car because he could barely move but he loved his car.... today i checked his phone and this is the last song he listened :') now this forever will be my favorite song and i know he will be watching over me always! Love you dad ❤
Gary: "Alright, what's the idea for this cover?"
Photographer: "Drive your invisible car."
Gary: (Does it, looking utterly confused)
"SNAP"
Photographer: "Whelp we're done here."
I’m a hard rock fan but this song is a masterpiece. That synth is mesmerizing and the singing is just perfect. Don’t know what happened to this artist but I hope he’s living a happy life.
Fun fact this song was first written in Boston in the early 1960s when numan said he picked up a hitchhiker who ended up being one of his classmates from 2nd grade. The song is about how he felt safe in the car with the hitchhiker because he ended up knowing him
According to Numan, the song's lyrics were inspired by an incident of road rage:
“I was in traffic in London once and had a problem with some people in front. They tried to beat me up and get me out of the car. I locked the doors and eventually drove up on the pavement and got away from them. It's kind of to do with that. It explains how you can feel safe inside a car in the modern world... When you're in it, your whole mentality is different... It's like your own little personal empire with four wheels on it.
