From Wikipedia: The song's melody is very similar to "Quarter to Three", a song released by Gary U.S. Bonds a few months prior to the release of "Runaround Sue."
I was 17 when this song came out. As the British say: I was gob-smacked. Then I saw kids dancing to it on American Bandstand --- and they weren't touching each other or holding hands. Both partners just kind of danced on their own to the song. Other than the Twist, this was the first time people danced not holding one another. It was a true turning point in the history of popular music. I'd like to meet Bonds and let him know what a historic change he ushered in.
Had my new '61 Super Stock Ford, a blond girlfriend whose name I can' t remember and rockin out to Quarter to Three. Remember it well. Well, sorta well anyway.
I saw Gary standing at an elevator on a recent cruise and didn't realize it was him until he had left. I had an album to be signed in my cabin a few feet away. You would cry too if it happened to you
