Take the ribbon from your hair shake it loose and let it fall
Lay it soft upon my skin like the shadows on the wall
Come and lay down by my side till the early morning light
All I’m taking is your time help me make it through the night
I don’t care who’s right or wrong I don’t try to understand
Let that devil take tomorrow Lord tonight I need a friend
Yesterday is dead and gone and tomorrow’s out of sight
And it’s sad to be alone help me make it through the night
I don’t care who’s right or wrong…
Lord it’s sad to be alone just help me make it through the night
Every time I hear this beautiful song, I think of my first ever proper girlfriend I was 18 and she was 16 who could sing this song so well, that was in 1980. We split up in December of that year, and god, I still miss her so much 35 years on!!
I went to the nursing home where my mom lay passing away, I spent the night in her room in a chair, snuck my hand under the sheets & held her hand, the whole night, I will never forget-- she raised up & cried, I gave her a big hug, told her i loved her always will, she ws my mom . My Best friend.
People can be very lonely being married or not, with lots of people around or not. Of course been lonely with so many people around or been married can worse the feeling of been lonely ... you know what ... we are all very, very lonely ... better not to think of it ... and keep hanging on ... just hanging on ... and do as best as we can ...

My mother sang this to me as a child when it was time for bed, and now as a mother of two i sing it to my children. My oldest (4) sings it to his baby sister.
This has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever sung....I know its been covered many many times but Gladys sings it with the most heartfelt passion...
