The country song 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' was very popular around the time this song was written. My guess is that this song was written to cash in on that popularity by putting a similar story in a railroad setting rather than featuring cowboys. That's just speculation on my part as I have no actual knowledge of the history of 'Ghost Trains.'

Classic with all the studio enhancement too -I bought this LP many years ago when I was following the Beatles down at the Cavern in Liverpool, suddenly, one day I discovered the lure of Country and Western music, (as it used to be labelled then). I heard a Jim Reeves track one day with a fabulous steel guitar sound on it ( missing Angel) and I was hooked. Then I heard Hank Snow and the rest is history as they say..

People sings and tell tales about ghost trains while ghost must come from something that was alive. It is because a steam locomotive is like a life especially to those railroad men and people who love it. The locomotives mentioned in this song were both wrecked in other train folk songs. "The Cannonball" was the Cannonball Express that was driven by Casey Jones on his final ride to fame, and the song Casey Jones is based on a true story. "No.9" is a fictional train wrecked in the song "the Wreck of No.9".

I remember learning the words to this song back in 1968 - I was only 12 years old. It was the first "grown-up" song I ever learned all the way through. Later in life, I would perform the song a few times at the local American Legion during week-end dances in the 1990s. By then, it had long fallen from the list of hit songs (many people never heard it before), but everyone enjoyed it. Through the years, I've thought about doing a re-make of his train songs in digital format and re-titling them "Steel Rails & Steam" - I always like that name. But alas, it was never meant to be.

Great song by a super artist!! Never knew Hank did this. Cool photo of a German class 44 (French class 150) 2-10-0 heavy freight locomotive with the large Wagner smoke deflectors.

Had the pleasure of seeing Hank Snow twice in Liverpool UK early 70's His live show was amazing. The Rainbow Ranch Boys were all great musicians. With Chubby Hayes on fiddle too. Hanks singing and unique style of guitar playing was just fantastic. No miming just pure raw talent. I have the LP of train songs with this track on it, still in mint condition in my collection. Thanks for the posting good to hear this again. Long live Hank Snow! Almost forgot to mention Hank featured a back up act on his second show in Liverpool -a little known (back then) clean shaven guy in a smart suit and a crew cut-Willie Nelson..
