I remember the bit about her saying "Girrrl," but I think Dusty changing the phrasing was separate from that. It's possible Dusty told two slightly different versions, or I could be misremembering. I'm pretty sure I heard it this way, though. I suspect part of the reason Dusty changed it live is because Aretha's way is easier to sing in a live performance. It's a more natural feel, where Dusty's is more nuanced. I guess you can't have everything.

WRONG!
Aretha sang it back to church and Dusty. being a great artist knew it.
Obvious as hell. That's why Dusty changed her arrangement to match LADY SOUL's.
Dusty has been covering Aretha before Aretha was even famous. She was remaking songs off Aretha's 1st lp on Columia. "HALLELUJAH! "
I was WRONG about one standard (there were 2) Forgot about the song from Porgy and Bess. The Billie song had never been recorded before Aretha, not even by BH herself. You define standard as any song written by a famous person? The LP was full of new songs (2 R&B hits) and Dusty ate it up. The point is that DS was a slave to RE BEFORE RE's fame. Millions (Includ DS) later covered AF's Atlantic hits.
PS: ALL HAIL THE QUEEN, PERIOD.
There is no room for "personal opinion" BS.
RE RULES.
I used to have a "favorite team" mentality about my favorite artists, but eventually I realized that all artists have different strengths and they all bring those different qualities to the material that they do. You prefer Aretha? Fine. No one can tell you you're wrong for preferring her, but that doesn't mean anyone else is wrong for preferring a different version.
I don't think Dusty recorded anything on Aretha's Columbia debut. Her material on Columbia was mostly old standards, anyway.
"The only one who could whip it on me...." Fantastic!! This was one of the great finds when I got the collection of all their music on CD. Only had "Sweet Replies" and "Soulful Tapestry" on vinyl, this one's from "Take Me With You".
