It's interesting how the song mixes the elements of tenderness and love towards those waiting at home for the soldiers' return, while it ends as a testimony to the havoc wreaked by the war and how General Hood 'made hell in Tenessee'.

Fell in love with him in The Black Stallion--he was the boy's dad, who died in the shipwreck... What a storyteller! (Alexander the Great and Bucephalus.)

"The gallant Hood of Texas played hell in Tennessee" - so was that a good thing or what?

"The Gallant Hood of Texas' (John Bell Hood), as well as his predecessor General Braxton Bragg wrecked the Army of Tennessee in the western theatre of the CW. These two should never have been promoted beyond the rank of Captain in anyone's army. Their successor, General Joseph Johnston interited a broken army which was surrendered to U.S General Sherman, who, in his own right. was a war criminal.

amy trevena - this song by hoyt always makes me cry, I expect because it was on the top charts in Sept. of 1955 when I was born. Of course it was done by Mitch Miller  then who absolutely ruined it. - just done too fast, like a march.  Sparkey Rucker- a soul-blues singer  also did much justice to this heart - felt ballad.

Yes, I'm a Native Texan... for 39 years of my life spent in this cherished State. My ancestors sacrificed their lives for Texas and the Confederacy. If my Yellow Rose is out there, may she come soon, or wait for me in heaven, for there is nothing down here to hold on to.

Kudos to Hoyt and John Hartford and friends for doing this authentic version of the Yellow Rose of Texas. One of my favorite songs as a child.
