Still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up one of the most gorgeous synth tunes ever, who ever said synths have no soul?

B side of Visions of China. I always thought this was stronger than Visions of. It also reminds me of my youth, 15 years old and deeply in love with my gf. Now i'm 51, this song takes me way back. Thank you Japan, loved you then, love you now.

I'm pretty sure Ryuichi Sakamoto did some of the synths on this track. He co-wrote the track, and the many of the synths in this track sound like Ryuichi's programming to my earballs.

Still vastly underrated and totally enduring after, what, 35 years?! This is one of the greatest pieces of modern music ever created.

A band consisting of self-taught musicians of the highest quality. The music press slaughtered Japan in the early years but David and the lads had self belief and stuck to their guns because they knew they had something special, something different. They ARE original and nobody has come close to making music like this. Mind blowing stuff !

Winter 2004. My girlfriend had left me and I remember having the WORST case of influenza, sweating profusely with very high fever in a lonely cold night, my throat felt like sandpaper and broken glass...but this melody haunted my mind and comforted me throughout in a long night

I was lucky enough to see this great band live twice in the early 80's- hugely underrated and Sylvians voice along with Bryan Ferry are completely iconic to me .

I think the line "Taking islands in Africa" clearly refers to the grandiose thoughts that flow through your mind when you isolate yourself from the world and get lost in your own daydreams. Any creative introvert would pick up on it right away. At least that's what I get from it in the context of "Swing".

Listen to the musical journey between "Quiet Life' and "Tin Drum":Japan became a wonderful and innovative band in a very short time. "Gentlemen Take Polaroids" is a beautiful album, and "Taking Islands" is so cinematic and perfect. I've spent more than a few weekends perfecting a finger picking acoustic version! People are beginning to disparage the 80s, but Japan were setting a course towards beautiful, timeless music. Thank you you David, Mick Karn and compatriots!
