Reminds me of Ralph McTell's Streets of London, in a good way. RIP Kirsty; we haven't forgotten.

Jhn Doe. I think you will probably find, after talking to her living friends perhaps, just as a rational idea, that she was probably extremely nice. And her lyrics certainly weren't racist or condescending. I think to translate them as such says a lot about the state of mind of the reader/listener! And,To tread on someone after they have died and can't talk back as you are though is palpably disgraceful and that is an actual evident fact. You silly bugger.

I loved Kirsty Macoll, raw talent, no autotune needed, I really miss her.

It's 19 years ago today since Kirstys life was cruelly cut short. When I was lucky enough to walk down Madison Avenue back in 2013 I was thinking of Kirsty & this song.

Kirsty MacColl always pushed boundaries and never rested on `easy'.  I miss her badly, because I know she would have got better and better.  I love her voice so much - an understated Alto with no affectation.  Her Dad is in there somewhere!  A lovely person also when I bumped into her in Oxford Street.  What's not to like?!

Wow! This is a great song and Kristy's subtle and not-so-subtle gestures hold the whole thing together. She was taken before her time.

Kirsty deserves to be so much better known than other artists who made it bigger with only 1/10 of her talent.

For me this is the very musical essence of my gap year 1991-1992. Great days, and a great song. Wish I could visit those times again just for a week.

Johnny Marr: ‘Walking Down Madison’, that was the first song that I wrote after The Smiths split. I wrote it like a week later. And I wrote it with the intention of…I did this quite a bit. I keep starting a solo record. And I would write one backing track and play it to a mate and they would nick it. So, I played it to Kirsty ’cause she was a really good friend. It was my intention to write this kinda dancey guitar record. And I brought a cassette around and she was like “Oh, it’s great. I’ll come up with some words to that.” “Oh, great cool, okay” ’cause I wasn’t interested in writing words at that time. And the next thing, she’s booked a session. And it’s going to be a single for her. But it turned out she kinda kidnapped it, bless her.

This song is an overlooked gem and deserves far more recognition!

In response to John Doe comment: First of all, Kirsty MacColl died because she pushed her son out of the way of the boat to save his life. Secondly, the boat sailed into an area designated for swimmers, therefore, Kirsty's family has every right to feel aggrieved and want justice for her. Thirdly, why don't you actually try listening properly to the lyrics before you start spewing your vitriol? She isn't making fun of anyone, she's singing about the divide between rich and poor in New York and-
