I own a few of Lees' albums, but haven't listened to them for ages. Geez this stuff is divine.

Probably a little of both. Rit always had a tasty vocal tune on most of his early albums. Plus, he was doing so much studio work back then with so many awesome pop artists, I'm sure he said I should do this. Then, you had the early crossover success of George Benson and Grover Washington. I'm sure these tunes paid a month of mortgage or three. :)

I have this 1982 album along with his 1981 gold album "Rit", which featured "Is It You?".

Thanks for posting this! Was working in radio in the early 80's when this song came out, and a buddy of mine and I sorta turned this into something of a local hit since we both worked at the radio station and spun records at the same killer local college bar on weekends. People were yelling for this song from the dance floor on Saturday nights. Don't know why it chart bigger that it did. Great Eric Tagg vocals, and I believe Bill Champlin sang on this album, too.
