When James first saw the lyrics Richey had written for this he didn't know what the hell he was suppose to do with them! But he managed to turn these very painfully honest lyrics into a brilliant piece of music. A raw portrayal of Richey writing about crazy, shitty, fake world around him. Hats off to both Bradfield and Edwards for this great song x x
When I'm feeling especially down, sad or depressed I listen to this album and it gives me some strange kind of comfort and feeling of reassurance that I can't quite explain. I hope I'm not the only one because it's so powerful. Sometimes I feel like it could heal the world, if only they would listen.
This album's music alone is Semtex for the brain, the lyrics are the same. Richey was a genius and this band touched a raw nerve with this album, a nerve most fear to go near. If nothing else they will be remembered for this raw album, the intense humming of evil is put down in musical form before us.
Bloody hell, i just read the lyrics for the first time after having the album for 10 years! Disturbing that these words came out of one man's head. But flippin genius!
Richey's observations of a decadent and decaying world, as he himself was slipping closer and closer into the inexorable mental abyss that led to his disappearance and possible death.
It is a fascinating juxtaposition of his views of the world with his own private turmoil and hell, a lot of which I can relate to myself.
The stuff about him standing for old ladies shows Richey's caring side, yet as we all know, being nice doesn't seem to work. Prostitution being the main occurring theme in the song makes me wonder if Richey himself ever went down that path. Or maybe he considered it? Maybe he just shared the pain of these victims in an empathic way.
It is a huge shame but people like Richey Edwards were never really meant to fit in I feel. Maybe he was too clever. Maybe he knew too much. He certainly never managed to find his own peace and happiness.
