A truly beautiful man. The impression I have is that he had little but wanted for nothing. Imagine what a world it would be with many more like he. His playing inspired me and I'm still nowhere near his playing after forty years.
The playing is absolutely exquisite, how one man can produce such a wonderful sound is magical, and his soft singing tops anything you could ever hear today.
Arlo Guthrie also covered My Creole Belle. I find it so amazing how so many of my favorite musicians cover songs first recorded by Mississippi John Hurt. As a lover of traditional/folk music, I see MJH as the primary influence for several generations of great American musicians. IMO, he belongs in the same category with Robert Johnson.
yes, He was. I saw an interview and Prine said He loved Mississippi John. He said he tried to immolate his picking style but just couldn't get it right.
The pure blues and folk music of America shows the happiness and good freedom of the country...he makes us so happy...I am glad he received the joy and merriment that he gave out..and still does...
John Sebastien tells the story of meeting John Hurt. He says they all partied but around 02:00 only him and the man were still awake, talking, drinking and smoking reefer.
