A very deep and somewhat cryptic multiple meaning song with prototypical obscure chord structures typical of Neil around this time. I still can't work out whether it's about the breaking up of crowded house in a reflective second person view, or the inner thoughts of one side of a couples violent relationship knowing that the other will always take them back. Maybe it's both or somewhat intertwined - there is a line in here referring to an argument with Paul Hester drunk and wearing high heels. There seems to be elemental nuances towards 'control' in this song.

First heard this as a fortunate spectator at a Work Records release event in Chicago with solo Neil standing 4ft in front of me. Scared the life into me.. The sound of (Human) Kindness:)....

Need to speak to a Neil Finn fan right now. This is just too beautiful to listen to alone

Love this song. It perfectly captures how a relationship morphs over time especially in those strained moments & when it changes up for the finale it's like the moments of bliss you experience when you make it past all the troubles & move forward. This whole album is beautiful & a true modern masterpiece. Such talent. Born in NZ, forged in OZ, best of both worlds. Legend, bro!

Lyrics: Tales from my head Can't buy the book No one's listening But I guess you could Try whistling this You say you're tired Liquid as water But you'll succumb now As I stroke your back I'm the best that you know And every time you think of me I hope you're thinking true romance And every time you want to leave You'll give us both another chance Warmest welcome Violent stranger He said come here As he pushed me down Impossible to do In high heels Walking into walls Ever wondered If you're here at all? Try whistling this And my words are ringing in your ears Drawing your attention now to all the things that you ignore If I can't be with you, I would rather have a different face If I can't be near you, I would rather be adrift in space And if the gods desert us now, I'll turn this chapel into flames And if someone tries to hurt you, I will put myself in your place

Thank you Neil Finn for the best song ever! I listened in earbuds while I kissed my rescue kitten. And that is really what happened .

I think that this is Neil's confession. I have thought long about the lyrical content of this song and as a writer myself, I know all too well how these can be badly misinterpreted. However, at the risk of getting it completely wrong, I'll give you my opinion on a little of the lyric.... "Warmest welcome violent stranger He said come here as he pushed me down Impossible to do In high heels, walking into walls Ever wondered if you're here at all? Try Whistling this...." In the last line, to me, Neil is almost saying " Try living with this...." - he's a married man, with children, and in bed his wife thinks he's the best that she's known. BUT.....he is a cross-dresser. I honestly couldn't care less about what Neil is or what his persuasions are. All I know is this man changed my life in a MASSIVE, POSITIVE way. And , no. I'm not a cross-dresser or gay, Bi or whatever. God bless you Neil Finn. X
