I just discovered the legacy of Paul Gilbert !! I just can´t believe what I missed all the years...this is sooooo freakn amazing. I love it, so good and yet so creative
Wtf are some of you saying? For starters Paul doesnt use sweep picking. He can sweep but in his playing he uses alternate picking, legato and string skipping. Although his favorite style is a combination of alt. picking and legato. What some people hear as sweeps is actually really fast string skipping. You dont have to sweep in order to play arpeggios really fast. Anyway Paul rocks and Jason rocks. Enjoy music...
Seriously, in the same breath u cant praise Paul while denigrating Yngwie. People forget paul grew up listening to yngwie - without him who knows how paul would have turned out - his style/inflection prolly would be quite different. I've been to numerous concerts of yngwies and he plays his ass off - he wants you to have a kickass time and the sweat and attitiude is real. Paul is one of the most gracious and easy to speak to demigods there is.
Paul has been one of my guitar hero's since the days with Racer x....some of the runs he does are inhuman,,,,,and insane!!!!...met him while working for Dean Markley Strings,,,,one of the nicest guys I've ever met...
Paul Gilbert is a household name to guitarists. But you would be amazed how many people never heard of him. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest electric guitar players to walk the planet.
Yes, especially since Jason Becker never really "came out of the 80's", at least not as a guitar player. Such a big shame, he had enormous potential, but nevertheless, Gilbert has accomplished a lot more and they're both just as melodic and pleasant to listen to. I love them both to death.
Paul never tried to do any serious sweeping because of 2 reasons: string skipping sounds better (if you have the stretch and agility) and the fact is that he has large hands
