I've said so many times that RK has the Dexter Gordon soul in his center. Not that DG is the prominence, but def the seasoning that formed this genius' horn.
In 1963 I heard about Roland Kirk and I was a great fan from that first moment. His very original way of playing struck me and inspired me e to improvise on the saxophone and keep on doing it.
I was driving with my son and I played a Kirk song and he was, “yeah I heard this..” I was like , “ really?” He says, “it’s From CupHead!” Sure enough Ruse of An Ooze is pretty much a Blues for Alice at x1.75 speed. In fact I’d say most of cuphead music is Roland Kirk music!
