Saw this on TV in 1973, on some (I think) Canadian hour-long show that totally sold me on this band. At one point on the programme they were 'awarded' some kind of accolade for being the band that sounded 'most like The Beatles'... at which they cheered, like that was a good thing. Whenever the Raspberries (or Badfinger) came on the radio in '72-'73, it was like a holy moment - talking stopped, volume knobs went up, and solemnity ensued, to savour every note... post-Beatles Beatlesque bands were that important. In an interview Eric admitted that his first idea for 'Let's Pretend' came from a cover on what he suggested was probably TIME magazine picturing (as he said) two teenagers, in the woods, wet from the rain or sweat, with the caption 'Teen Sex' heralding some article within. I have never traced the exact issue; but it'd be a fun project to try. I included 'Let's Pretend' in the set list of the fictitious band (actually a conscious mimic of The Raspberries) in my fiction series that begins with the novel 'Love Me Do' (written when I was about 17). The boys from Cleveland were that big of an influence.

This is one of the gems--and the Raspberries and Eric Carmen had more than a few--that poured out of that little AM radio and completely enveloped you, lodged in your unconscious. So much for "throwaway pop." This sounds as marvelous and as beautiful as the first time I heard it.

Eric was consider a musical prodigy by the time he was four years old,he can played any instrument he put his mind to,and absolute incredible vocal range, the band had great harmony, originally from the Cleveland Ohio area, believe the song hit number 39 on the billboard charts in 1973.

I love this song. I never paid much attention to the Raspberries when they were around, now I regret it very much. Great band!

Damn. Does anyone else remember when music was good?? Pete Ham, The Sweet, Mick Ronson. Screw MTV, Autotune & everything else since Elvis Costello, Talking Heads and XTC. Real music still rules. Just try to find it.
