My ex-boyfriend played this song for me once, just before he was killed in an auto accident in 1979. I always think of him and cry when I hear it.

I don't have a pain memory with this song.  Our son was a newborn and my husband was finishing up his masters degree in engineering.  He belonged to a scuba diving club and we had gone on a mini vacation to Seattle with the scuba club and stayed at a little cottage on the sound.  This song was playing and the rain was falling on the window.  I could be in touch with the feeling of the song, yet felt, at the same time, so very warm, happy, and loved.  I slept close to my husband, and our new little infant lay in there with us.  Now that little babe is grown into a wonderful young man, but my wonderful husband of nearly 50 years has now passed.  But this song brings all of the good memories back clearly into mind.  The song centers around sadness, but my memory is filled with joy.

Magnificent rendition. . .when singers really sang, music had words, there were real tunes.

No one ever sang this song better than Ray Price. I remember this song when the 45 dropped in the jukebox again and again. Yet, I was not at an age to drink in the dives frequented in El Paso, many a drunken men grabbed hold of their women and danced as if it was their last. For now I'll just press repeat. Being a hopeless romantic doesn't hurt that bad. I thought I would mention after a year of posting this comment, John Conlee's "Rose Colored Glasses" was another song that couldn't have been done better.

Everyone has lost someone they truly loved. Broken hearts & dreams gone but not forgotten . Your first love will never leave your memory.. These songs refresh those yesterday's when all was good.

You know, Kris Kristofferson should of been nominated into the country songwriter Hall of fame. Not only did he write this song, but he also wrote other timeless classics like, "Me and Bobby Mcgee", by Janis Joplin, and "Help me make it through the night", by Sammi Smith, and I believe he also wrote, "Ode to Billy Joe", by Bobbie Gentry. A talented man. :-) He didn't get any recognition for his gifted songwriting skills.

“There no need to watch the bridges that we’re burning....” God, this song just guts me every single time I hear it. The lyrics, the melody, the voice. Might be one of the saddest songs ever. But so beautiful

I play this for the Alzheimer residents at work. Stops them in their tracks, they go somewhere. Some cry. Brings them back.
