The first two Taste albums are just fantastic -- right up there with the first two from Free, Ten Years After and Cream. Essential records -- along with a Gibson 335 and a Marshall half-stack -- for learning the British blues.

Everyone is saying what to do and what to think And when to ask permission when you feel you want to blink First look left and then look right and now look straight ahead Make sure and take a warning of every word we've said Now you lay you down to sleep make sure and get some rest Tomorrow is another day and you must pass the test Don't try and think too different now what we say is best Listen little man you're no better than the rest Don't lay beside the wayside all around the road we've set Smile and look happy fool or we'll throw you in the wet Now if you learn your lesson well and step upon the line Save your breath until forever we should get along just fine We'll bend your heart until it breaks make sure you feel no pain We'll be the one to crush you and give you to the rain But now you want to run away oh can I see you run Run across the frozen air try resting on the sun And if you feel it burn you don't yell out in pain Or wish you had a velvet sponge full of soothing rain So let's have that stiff upper lip now take a long deep breath Close your ears you cannot hear the rules are all pre-set You thought we were illusions but we meant the word we said We're in command, you tiny fly, we'll crush you till you're dead these are this masterpieces lyrics

Such a versatile player. The intro sounds like proto-punk.

I can't get over the lyrics.  He was ahead of his time.

That amazing tone created with a Vox AC30 a treble booster and a wrecked Strat...AWESOME!

Rory always sounded contemporary, no matter what. Nobody would know this was from the '60's if it were played on the radio right now....

Me and my best friends saw him at Torquay Town Hall 1971 WOW has been my lifelong Hero since. Still makes the hair on back of my neck stand up when I listen even now at 67

This was the first song I ever heard from Taste. It just blew me away and all other music I'd enjoyed up until then went out the window (for sometime). Love everything they ever did and of course, all that was to follow. Although I've spent a lifetime loving Rory's work, Taste (to this day) stand apart as a truly great Blues/Rock trio. Thanks so much for posting this one.

I remember buying this single when it came out! It was on Major-Minor here in the UK. A bit of a nugget I thought! Used to see them pretty regularly during their Marquee Club days. I remember Rory always looked like he'd just woken up. He used to stand stage centre with a wooden chair behind him. On the chair stood his Vox AC30 Valve Amp. His battered Strat went straight into that.........And that was it!!

From one of the first albums I ever bought in 69. I’ve still got it, scratched to pieces ! I still know the exact place in this song that the needle jumped ! Fabulous song from one of the greatest guitarist ever! The thing about Rory, and Jimi, is that he sounds nothing like that Texas blues style that everyone else sounds like. I love SRV too but so many guitar players sound like him - Rory, Gary, Jimi and David Gilmore sound like a breath of fresh air in a strange kind of way in my opinion.
