I’m not going to complain that they don’t make music like this anymore; I’m just grateful that it got made period.

I'm from Detroit, I see this song as someone telling a story about history. We as a country should never forget our history.Yes a lot of southern boys died for this country In two world wars . We are all Americans, as one we stand divided we fall. Some of my best friends came from the south when there family came to Detroit to work in the steel mills and auto plants. Some time words have two meaning and people take it and use it in wrong ways. I think Levon Helm just telling about history, this is one great songs and the heart and soul comes out of it .Thats all . Keep on with the southern fried rock. Love it in DETROIT. Not only great music comes from the south ,good people do too.

I m proud to say that on September 7th of this year...last Friday , I was driving in southern Arkansas ..close to where Levon Helm was raised ..I looked up at the road sign, that said I was on the Levon Helm Memorial Highway..That made me feel good inside ...It was in Helena, Arkansas....Home of the Blues Festival... I have always enjoyed and admired Levon...we all miss him...He was a Southern Treasure...

It was not about race. It was about loved ones lost in an insipid conflict.

This American Experience....I love my country more than my own LIFE. I wore many hats.... Marine...pilot...fire fighter...skydiver...scuba diver...prospector... writer...hunter...builder... GOD has indeed smiled on my life....MOST IMPORTANTLY... HE ALLOWED ME TO BE AN AMERICAN... THE GREATEST PRIVILEGE IN THE UNIVERSE! GOD HAS BLESSED OUR AMERICA!!!

A profound, heart-wrenching song...for me, anyway. Listen to the lyrics: this isn't the lament of a wealthy plantation/slave owner, demagogue, or political firebrand shouting that the South will rise again. It's the struggle of a regular guy trying to remain stoic in the face of his world being turned upside down by war. At least that's how I interpret it. One of my favorite songs ever.

One of the greatest performances in the rock era, and captured in beautiful color and magnificent sound. We often here of magical performances and have no record of them, but here, we have it, forever.

Music has definitely de-volved since then. Where did this level of songwriting and talent go to? Modern music is GOD-AWFUL. This is how songs should be written and performed. He's singing from a place that modern singer-songwriters can only dream of finding. Today's music has no soul...and zero heart.

Yall come down to Ole Dixie and hang out with us for a little bit. You might discover some things about the natives and our culture, but more importantly a little something about yourself. There is not place on Earth as loving, as warm, and as inviting as Ole Dixie. Yes we have a crosses to bear like any culture but we sure do love this country, each other, and our ways of life.
