it took a long time to get back here
my slate is clear
Rest your head on me my dear, my slate is clear
So well i could not get back, it took a world of trouble One, rest your head on me my dear
You won and you also lost, try so hard to stand alone, it took a world of trouble
yeah my way was hard to find
It took a world of tears, it took a world of trouble
Try so hard to stand alone, but it never came across, it took a long time to get back here
You can t say what you don t know, rest your head on me my dear, later on won t work no more
Rest your head on me my dear, it took a long time to get back here
But it never came across, yeah my way was hard to find, it took a long time to get back here
yeah my way was hard to find
It took a long time to get back here, later on won t work no more
My slate is clear, but it never came across Petty, my slate is clear
It took a long time to get back here, rest your head on me my dear Tom, it took a world of trouble
My slate is clear, my slate is clear, so well i could not get back
it took a world of tears
it took a world of tears
My slate is clear, always had more dogs than bones
my slate is clear
it took a world of tears
So well i could not get back, last time through i hid my tracks
But it never came across, rest your head on me my dear
Rest your head on me my dear, it s a dark victory, later on won t work no more
My slate is clear, can t sell your soul for peace of mind
My slate is clear, it took a long time to get back here, it s a dark victory
It took a long time to get back here, rest your head on me my dear, it took a world of tears
My slate is clear, it took a world of tears, but it never came across
rest your head on me my dear
can t sell your soul for peace of mind
It took a world of trouble, it took a long time to get back here Tom, rest your head on me my dear
it took a world of tears
Anyone who has been through a divorce, or thoroughly painful breakup hears these words and can feel their own experience echoed in Tom Petty's in the early to mid 90's. More soul in his little finger than the current generation's entire catalog. Gone but never forgotten.
Had to find some higher ground
Had some fear to get around
You can't say what you don't know
Later on won't work no more
Last time through I hid my tracks
So well I could not get back
Yeah my way was hard to find
Can't sell your soul for piece of mind
Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time... to get back here
Try so hard to stand alone
Struggle to see past my nose
Always had more dogs than bones
I could never wear those clothes
It's a dark victory
You won and you also lost
Told us you were satisfied
But it never came across
Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time... to get back here
Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time... to get back here
Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
And took a long time... to get back here
How can you not love Tom Petty?
Had to find some higher ground
Had some fear to get around
You can't say what you don't know
Later on won't work no more
Last time through I hid my tracks
So well I could not get back
Yeah my way was hard to find
Can't sell your soul for piece of mind
Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time... to get back here
Try so hard to stand alone
Struggle to see past my nose
Always had more dogs than bones
I could never wear those clothes
It's a dark victory
You won and you also lost
Told us you were satisfied
But it never came across
Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time... to get back here
Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
Took a long time... to get back here
Square one, my slate is clear
Rest your head on me, my dear
It took a world of trouble, took a world of tears
And took a long time... to get back here
I am at square one today. No better place to be than starting over and new beginnings. Song reminds me that no matter how tough things get everything always seems to come back around. Love the lyrics and profoundness of this simple song.
I am a recovering alcoholic as is Benmont Tench (no secret) I go to an NA meeting because it works for me. This song is part of their ritual. Threw me for a loop at the beginning but now I don't think about it anymore. Extraordinary man, will not see his likes again in this lifetime. Inspirational … add your own adjective! Thank you Tom.
LOVE this song. What Tom Petty was able to do by putting a few perfect words together in a perfect way to say something that’s so meaningful to so many people was just pure perfection
My best friends dad died when he was seven, and he loved him dearly. I had never heard this song before today. It was his 17th birthday party and me and him were riding in my car, he was visibly having a hard day. He randomly plays this song and tells me it was his dad's favorite song. I had never seen him cry before today. I know I am being personally, I just thought I'd share how much this song and artist meant someone. I will always remember it.
This song used to make me cry because I missed home so much. Now I
don't know where home is, so I call myself home plate.... This way I am
always home.
