The unofficial anthem of the USA - written by a communist. I love this so much.

During the quarantine period, specifically at night under the moonlight and the stars shine, I listen to this masterpiece and wander all over the world in my imagination ❤️

I remember having to sing this in school. Of course they conveniently removed the line about private property.

As Arlo said, that verse about the sign "private property" you won't here at Disneyland. That said, despite his politics, Woody never joined the Communist Party USA because Woody refused to renounce Christianity.

As I went walking I saw a sign there  And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."  But on the other side it didn't say nothing,  That side was made for you and me. In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,  By the relief office I seen my people;  As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking  Is this land made for you and me? Nobody living can ever stop me,  As I go walking that freedom highway;  Nobody living can ever make me turn back  This land was made for you and me!

We are all equal. The color of your skin does not define who are. This land was made for you and me.

Guthrie was no Stalinist. He was a distinctly American kind of socialist in the same vein as DeLeon and Eugene Debs. He was a product of several generations of extreme hardship and poverty for the common man in both the cities and countryside and wrote and travelled during single worst period of it, becoming a voice of the American workingman during the labor movement's rise. He didn't patronize the workers, he walked from among them.

it's funny how some of the most accredited and important american folk singers, like woodie guthrie and pete seeger, were adamantly socialists and antifascists. of course, no one likes to talk about that, i wonder why...

This preceded "Fortunate Son" and "Born in the USA" as the song most co-opted by people who had no idea what it meant.

Being child of immigrants born in the US I remember singing this song in kindergarten. Made me feel what America is really about
