It's just a short leap from Wynonie's "Shake That Thing" to Little Richard's "Slippin' and Slidin'" as R&B morphs into Rock& Roll in 1954.

Marvellous. What a voice. What a life! Someone should make a movie about Wynonie's life - he was at the center of changes in popular music that directly led to rock n' roll. Plus, his life was certainly a roller coaster!

By the time this was released, Harris had gone from one of the architects of Rock to one of its "has beens" as far as any hope of mass market appeal. Once the White invasion of early Rock, lead by Bill Haley and a Memphis truck driver took root, the original foundations of the new music, rooted in part by R&B artists of the late 1940's were quickly forgotten. Artists of color did continue to have hit records after 1954, but almost all of these artists were from the "second wave" of acts that came in the wake of such names as Harris, Roy Brown and others who laid the original groundwork.
