What really makes this an interesting song is how conventional and pop-ish it is compared to most of the Brand X fusionist oeuvre. They were simply not a pop band, although this proves how well they could have handled it.

I used to dream I was in Thailand. I found no comfort in a spoon. .....and the band was always high there. Till we ran right out of tune..... Those lyrics were better that any of that Genesis nonsense. This band was the real deal.

Drums, guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals brought together in total fusion. Possibly one of THE best rock fusion tracks ever. I first heard this in 1980 and I'm still gripped by the intricacy of its construction.

Interesting to note that while Phil was trying occasionally to steer BX in a vocal direction, at the same time he was also encouraging Genesis to record more instrumentals, eg. Do The Neurotic, The Brazilian (...didn't have the same connotations back then!), Submarine, Wot Gorilla? And as a sub-sub-footnote, anybody else noticed how absolutely Genesis-like Hawkwind sounded on the track Fable Of A Failed Race on their Quark, Strangeness And Charm album?

Brings back great memories...Toronto CN Stadium. Lineup: Brand X Max Webster Genesis (And Then There Were Three Tour). First time I heard the reference for everyone to "Sit Down" (ala Home By The Sea).

Brand X was formed in 1974/5 ish , out of Peter Banks' jam band "Zox And The Radar Boys" which never released an album in 1973/4, then evolved into: EMPIRE . Phil Collins AND Bill Bruford were in on the early incarnations of BRAND X . They definitely were influenced by Mahavishnu Orchestra and so called "fusion" bands .

I've always wished they'd recorded more stuff like this. After all these years, it's literally the only track from the album I still play. And I definitely play it loud.

if you listen to the whole album, you'll find 'Soho' on it as well - another vocal track. As I recall '..And so to F..' has some ambient vocals, but time may be hazing my memory

Notice something about this track: it is almost perfectly scored to be both played and sung by its drummer. The rhythm of the vocals during the chorus follows all the fills and emphasised hits, while the verses float along pretty freely over basic time-keeping. Collins may have been thinking that he'd have to sing and play this live, as Brand X wouldn't be hiring a stand=in for him like Genesis.
