I've just started to really discover Bowie's work and when I think I've got a favourite song, I hear something as fantastic as this. The sheer volume of incredible music he has is mind-blowing.

The song features an acclaimed piano solo by Mike Garson, an American keyboardist who had recently joined Bowie's band. Bowie politely rejected Garson’s initial solo attempts, one in a blues style, the other Latin, asking the pianist for something akin to "the avant-garde jazz scene in the 60s". Garson obliged with the performance heard on the album, improvised and recorded in one take. ONE TAKE

The name of the album is a pun on "A Lad Insane". An early variation was "Love Aladdin Vein", which David Bowie dropped partly because of its drug connotations

Okay, here's my favorite Bowie songs (no particular order): Aladdin Sane, Sound and Vision, Ashes to Ashes, Life On Mars, The Man Who Sold the World, Oh You Pretty Things, Suffragette City, Five Years, and I'm Afraid of Americans. Probably more. Screw it, I love it all.

Nice to see you kids discovering Mr. Bowie. I remember in 1973 leaving this album on the dining room table, went upstairs to my room for something. When I came downstairs my father was holding the album cover, screaming,"What is this? He's a homosexual sadomasochist and so are you!!" I'm pretty he was drunk. I know I was. I grabbed the album, said "fuck you" and left the house. David Bowie had that affect on people back then, he scared the shit of them. And not just parents: people my age as well. Timeless music though, accompanied by his iconic sartorial stylings.

The name is a pun on "A Lad Insane" and it was inspired by Bowie's half-brother Terry, who had been diagnosed as a schizophrenic. Thanks Wikipedia :-)
