Genuinely a career highlight song, which bizarrely was not only not used as a single, but has never been on compilations, as with the equally head-swimming Lady Grinning Soul.
This album is incredible. When it came out I was like 11 but my Uncle always played it in his car, on 8-track..LOL...He had a very nice Lincoln and me and my mom were poor, but he worked for American Airlines and he knew I liked to watch planes and we would drive to the airport where he worked to watch planes and I would ask him to play this album while we drove to airport :) The we would go t Shakey's for pizza! But the album and the planes were the highlight of the day :)
Bowie said he was very messed up with a coke addiction during the Young Americans period, & his mental health was poor. He described himself as being "schizoid" at the time, but somehow he was still able to write songs easily, describing the process as "picking songs out of the air".
Once upon a time, I fell in love with someone and this is the soundtrack of our love affair. We shared moments of luxury amongst the squalor of our lives and ended up as victims of our own desire.
Thank you for this song, David. I really loved him.
One of my favourite scenes in "The Man Who Fell To Earth" was near the end when Rip Torn is in the record store and a "Young Americans" display is visable for a second or two! I thought that was a nice touch.
Me...I hope that I'm crazy
I feel you driving and you're only the wheel
Slow down...let someone love you
I've never touched you since I started to feel
If there's nothing to hide me, then you've never seen me hanging naked and wired
Somebody lied, but I say it's hip to be alive
Now that your smile is spreading thin
It seems you're trying not to lose
Since I'm not supposed to grin
All you've got to do is win
Me...I'm fresh on your pages
A secret thinker sometimes listening aloud
Life lies dumb on its heroes
Wear you wound with honor...make someone proud
Someone like you should not be allowed to start any fires...
