Ca' the yowes tae the knowes Ca' them whar the heather grows Ca' them whar the burnie rowes My bonnie dearie Hark the mavis' evening song Sounding Clouden's woods among Then a-faulding let us gang My bonnie dearie We'll gae doon by Clouden site Thru the hazels spreading wide O'er the waves that sweetly glide Tae the moon sae clearly Fair and lovely as thou art You hae stown my very heart I can die but canna part My bonnie dearie Ca' the yowes tae the knowes Ca' them whar the heather grows...

Do you know "On a good day" by Joanna Newsom? This song must have been her inspiration.

Song written by the "unspeakebly wonderful Robert Burns" (as said Michael Marra) at the end of the 18th century ! A intemporal masterpiece, indeed.

I first heard this song sung by Robin Hall and Jimmie MacGregor, who did a superbly beautiful rendition. I can't say Dougie's is better, but his is gorgeous too. (I kind of prefer the tempo and the 4/4 time signature that Hall and MacGregor used, but comparing the two versions is pretty much apples and oranges.) Thanks for posting Dougie's recording (and I love the graphics).

I remember singing this in our Scottish music class at school, this version is the best I've heard. Haunting melody and lyrics from start to finish. I have images of crofters bringing in their few sheep at the end of the day's toil. The smell of peat fires and oil lamps
