There are two takes to this; this is the preferable one and while this record is pretty well known for the Coleman Hawkins solo, and deservedly so, I also like the Buster Bailey clarinet spot.

I like to think that this record captured the magic of the Fletcher Henderson orchestra that so strongly influenced Benny Goodman. Such a mature, smooth, swinging sound here, with no attempt to play "hot." Compare this record to other recordings of Will Hudson tunes (Benny's own record of "Nitwit Serenade" is a perfect example) and you'll see what I mean.

This band is tight. Great arrangement. Playing together many times a day, week in week out. Difficult to assemble a similar band today, they would not be subject to the same rigours.

In response to Zach... Henderson was the acknowledged master, even at the time, but there were many great black orchestras playing swing before the swing era proper started in 1936; check out Claude Hopkins,Teddy Hill,Benny Carter,Jimmie Lunceford,Chick Webb to name but a few.

One of his finest records. It really has a nice tight swinging feel to it.Will Hudson wrote a lot of good instrumental compositions

I'm just now getting into the "swing" of things, does anyone else have any suggestions of other bands similar to Fletcher Henderson? Picked up Hocus Pocus at Goodwill on cassette. Best 35 cents I've ever spent.
