The first time I heard him sing was 1947 at Hamilton HS in Los Angeles. What a voice, the best!

My mother sang at the Apollo Theater many many moons ago, she won first place and a man by the name of Frank LoVecchio took second place, my mother remembers Franks mom smacking him across the face because he lost, if anyone remembers how the old Italians were you will understand that. Lol my mother and Frank started singing together in the Stamford Connecticut area, maybe New York also, I have no idea, it was way before I was thought of. one day Frank tells my mother he wants to go on the road and try to make it big, my grandmother tells my mother, you a no go with a the show people! so Frank went on and obviously became Frankie laine. pretty cool story. my mother in two months will be a hundred years old, she still goes out almost every night, and doesn't take one medication. and believe it or not, yes, she still sings, right in tune also. she's a tank! Lol

A sweeter, kinder, nicer man never walked God's green earth. His talent was strictly the cherry on top of the sundae.

After Frankie brought "Desire" out in 1946, many singers recorded this song but I don't think any were better than Frankie's. But I think this 1957 Columbia recording with Paul Weston Orch. was the best.

My mother sang with Frankie lane before he was Laine, I think it was Lavechio, if I'm spelling it right. They were in a singing contest together, Mom took first place Frank taking second. The funny part is Frankie's mother smacked him in the face because he didn't win, lol That's how the old school Italians were. After, they sang together at something called walkathons etc. Frank & my mother were going to try to make it big, but my Granmother said, "you noa go witha the show people" she's now 98

I think this arrangement sounds like it has the early hints of Rock and Roll , used in that period ( 1957). If you speed this song up , ( Up the Tempo ) , It could of been a Rock and roll smash!

Everyone has their favorites, I guess it depends on what period in time your taste in music began. You like his early jazz best. Me I like his Pop 50's such as "Hummingbird", "Jezibel", "Wild Goose" "Black Lace" and "The Greater Sin" That's the music I grew up in but that's just me.

My Dad was a nightclub entertainer in the 50s and 60s ... he was an "imitator" and Frankie Laine was his favorite. Listening to this is like listening to my Dad. I really miss him.
