This is a Dead song that had the flavor of a Jethro Tull tune.

I remember, as a teenager, playing a piano version, while on LSD

Yeah, not the definitive version but much of this old Dead stuff is going to go down in history as far superior in writing and execution when compared to popular/successful bands of the same era. Thanks in no small part to one Robert Hunter...hail him..give thanks to his genius, without there would not be such beauty!

Made it to a couple shows before Jerry Garcia died when I was about 17. Not much of a head but I've always had a soft spot for some of their earlier stuff and have always had a lot of respect fro the band. Always liked this one. Jerry really had fucking rad voice for this kind of song. Bought this record at a garage sale in high school. Girlfriends and shitty weed with the lights off in moms basement...

The all-black carrion crow is one of the cleverest, most adaptable of our birds. It is often quite fearless, although it can be wary of man. They are fairly solitary

Cold Mountain water, the jade merchant's daughter Mountains of the Moon, Electra, bow and bend to me Hi ho, the Carrion Crow, folderolderiddle Hi ho, the Carrion Crow, bow and bend to me Hey Tom Banjo Hey a laurel More than laurel you may sow More than laurel you may sow Hey the laurel Hey the city in the rain Hey, hey, hey the white wheat Waving in the wind 20 degrees of solitude, 20 degrees in all All the dancing kings and wives assembled in the hall Lost is a long and loneliest time, fairy Sybil flying All along the, all along the Mountains of the Moon Hey Tom Banjo It's time to matter The Earth will see you on through this time The Earth will see you on through this time Down by the water the Marsh King's Daughter Did you know? Clothed in tatters, always will be Tom, where did you go? Mountains of the Moon, Electra, Mountains of the Moon All along the, all along the Mountains of the Moon Hi ho, the Carrion Crow, folderolderiddle Hi ho, the Carrion Crow, bow and bend to me Bend to me

What an incredibly bizarre and beautiful bass line. What a unique and classic song. So fortunate to have lived in the era of the Grateful Dead.

I hold the carrion crow, Fald-e-riddle, I hold the carrion crow, Bow and bend to me. Sounds like a verse straight out of 'The Anthology of American Folk Music'.
