My best friend and I still are fans of Level 42. His catchphrase to me is always "Take care of yourself". R.I.P Alan. Saw him in the RDS in Dublin 1988

Yip, Alan was a fantastic guitarist, he's on alot of Go West albums then obviously Level 42's, his playing is very distinctive, quite sad to see how ill he became in 9/10mths on from the Level 42 tour, always felt L42 was in the wilderness for a good few yrs after Alan had died, band & guitarist wise.

Surprisingly, Murphy in this video - despite being closer to death and evidently having lost hair and grown thinner - seems fitter and more active than the Princes Trust gig earlier the same year. Fair play to him for doing what he loved and continuing to live a private life away from media. Anonymity is best.

Such a wonderful and haunting song. Must have been a really exciting time period in England. AIDS has taken so many of my favorite musicians' lives.

Very difficult to watch - he still looked well at the Princes Trust gig earlier in the year (I have the original DVD & he played a blinder). Huge inspiration and influence and sorely missed.

At 1:23 Mark looks at Alan with such desolation.  Quite poignant, in retrospect.  It's a great video of a great song, though.  Thanks for posting.

I swear looking at Alan here in comparison to the previous year, it sure saddens me to see him like this. But the look Mark had on his face looking at Alan is just really heartbreaking.

Alan Murphy: a portrait of dignity and courage, despite the fact he probably felt terribly sick here. He was one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard, but much more importantly by all accounts an absolute gentleman, and total professional. He wasn't just a victim of HIV, he was a victim of time and probably ignorance too. Rest In Peace Alan, and thank you.

Uh, wow. This is surreal, and somewhat poignant. Check out the look Mark gives Alan at 1:23. This vid would've been made not long before the album "Level Best" was released on the 30th of October. Alan died on the 19th of October, before the album was released. I think the band might have already known Alan had a death sentence. This explains why, to me, the band just seems to be going though the motions. Too bad, I heard he was a marvelous musician.

Were they working on a studio album? Or was this a one off for a greatest hits package

Poor Alan, he looks so sick. I love that he seems to genuinely be having fun with his mates despite what he must have been going through at the time. RIP to one of my favorite guitar inspirations, Alan Murphy.
