Thanks for posting this great video! I loved it. As a side note: this song was written in 1936 by Teddy Powell and Leonard Whitcup. Donegan was a big fan of Lonnie Johnson, and took his first name as a tribute to him. On one occasion Donegan opened for the blues musician Lonnie Johnson at the Royal Festival Hall. The story goes that the host at the concert got the musicians' names confused, calling them "Tony Johnson" and "Lonnie Donegan", and Donegan was happy to keep the name.
A great feast of Donegan songs, thanks for uploading! He really was a top notch performer! Can someone, please, upload his version of "Nobodys Child" it is heart rending, quite beautiful! He was, as mentioned, born in Glasgow, Scotland and lived mostly down South! However I remember on his tour of the US, the advertising posters called him "The Singing Irishman"! Go figure!
I am from Glasgow, Scotland; now I live in Denver Colorado USA.
I've only just discovered this man. I found a very old advert about him on the back of an Gramophone catalogue from the late 50's. I guess the advert is still effective even now. I like this. It sounds like a cross between Presley and Dylan. I mean that as a compliment.
Oups - I already thought this was from Knopfler! I like Lonnie very much since my father introduced me to him decades ago - unique voice. Try his "seven golden daffodils"!
