It’s so hard now
Trying hard now
Getting strong now
Won’t be long now
Getting strong now
Gonna fly now
Flying high now
Gonna fly, fly, fly…
My middle school stage band (6th & 7th grade) played this chart in 1982 and competed with high school bands in Hershey Park, PA. We were chosen to play at the awards ceremony in front of 800 of our competitors and friends/family. Most exhilarating night of my life...we all felt like rock stars. I had the Maynard lead part, and was scared to death. Didn't realize until years later what an indelible impression it would leave. Still have the trumpet (Bach Strad) that I played - 30+ years later. Shout out to our band director, Karen Hedden, who had the chutzpah and foresight to put a bunch of overachieving pre-teens in such a setting.
I have a bluetooth, bike-mounted speaker that cranks that I love to BLAST this on while cycling. Nothing but big smiles all around. (Waaayy better than the Conti version.)
When this first came out I mistakenly bought the Conti original, not knowing there were two different versions. Compared to Maynard's version it sounded positively wimpy. I remember standing there with my mouth open, like what the—?!? I don't think I've ever been more disappointed with a purchase in my entire life.
my school jazz band did this arrangement. we had the local middle school band teacher come play maynard's parts, and he nailed it. maybe the most fun i've ever had.
Played this version in HS jazz band. The really strange part is that the point guard who was good for 30 points every night was also the only trumpet that could reach Maynard's tones. He'd play halftime still in his BB uni.

I own a SUPERBONE trombone that Maynard Ferguson helped design. It has valves and a slide and I love to play it! Thank you Maynard for a GREAT HORN and MUSIC! !
I got my first trumpet when I was 10. By the time I was 12 I was listening to actual vinyl records of Maynard. This has to be 1985. Not long after that I was gifted my first Sony walkman with built in cassette player on September 28th, 1986. I would find myself listening to mostly Maynard. Sometimes some Myles Davis and some Dizzy. But those guys didn't get my blood pumping like Maynard did. He still does. Im 45 now. My Daughter just got her first trumpet. I wonder if she will be able to shake a double 6 at my age? I still can.
