Let's hear if for Little Walter!
I loved a movie that came out a couple of years ago, Cadillac Records (drama about Chess Records) - little Walter was kind of a half crazy, badass type of guy. You may have seen it - if not, I consider it a must-see.
MTV & VH1 had to resort to squeezing out "Real World" crap & done away with music, because there isn't enough singer/song writers today ...just recycled poptarts.
Oh gosh. Willie Dixon wrote a ton of songs, some for himself, some for others. This song is a classic. It is probably the most covered Dixon song. My first encounter of this tune was when my older brother brought home the first Stones album. I am reading the credits, and Willie Dixon is listed as the writer. Who in the heck is Willie Dixon and what is his connection with the Stones? It took education from my brother and research on my own to realize who the real blues masters were. Thank you Bro, and thank you Rolling Stones, for helping me discover real American Blues.
And by the way, the Stones tune "2120 South Michigan Ave" was recorded at Chess Records as their personal tribute to those masters. My younger brother and his wife went there a couple of years ago, and got the grand tour by Dixon's grandson. It is on my bucket list to make my own trip.
"I don't want you sad and blue, I just wanna make love to you!"
when i was a teen I used to be fond of saying " The English classic rock bands took American blues and improved upon it ! " I was so wrong then . This kind of music cannot be improved upon .It is perfect in every way . Muddy , Howlin Wolf , Lighnin Hopkins , Leadbelly , that is where its at . ( And yes I still love the classic rock bands )
Lyrics from the middle verse "Tell by the way that you switch and walk..." were used on The Violent Femmes' "Gone Baby Gone" track from their debut album. Willie Dixon was credited as a co-composer for the song lyrics used.
