Sidney took this piece and made it his own when he was at the height of his creativity and,by the way, it is a very simple tune based on "St James Infirmary", a very old tune
I was 13 years and heard a Sidney Bechet record. That's where it all started for me. At age 14 I took my first lesson on soprano sax and from that point it went further on, all saxes, modern jazz etc etc.
The saddest thought that will occur to me, perhaps, this week:
This, gritty, bluesy, masterful performance, a duet really, between Bechet and guitarist Teddy Bunn, was recorded in June of 1939; George Gershwin, the composer, died in July of 1937.
He never got to hear this particular performance of this tune...
How he would have loved it.
Always a pleasure to hear my late friend and teacher, Teddy Bunn, on acoustic guitar...too bad he's not credited. This recording, on a BlueNote 78, is very famous in France, and belongs in every collection of classic jazz. Jeep Rosenberg
I like 20s-30s jazz but this is the first person I've come to actually love from this period. Him and Robert Johnson. Everyone else sounds the same to an untrained ear like mine.
