There are one or two SP songs that sound like Cabaret Voltaire, and then there are huge things that dont. "Assimilate" could almost be on Red Mecca (the vocals?) except the synth elements are way too nice.
That one thing I like about SP, the contrast of beautiful synths and sequences with gristly samples and processing.
Early NIN sounds almost exactly like middle period "Crackdown" era Cabaret Voltaire btw. Even the vocals.

I'm 52 and remember the SHIT I got from my friends when I'd play punk, or later more "industrial" music (sorry for the labels).... Never mind MY bollocks, This "genre" has, perhaps, the most highly polished production/engineering methods there are. It's sad music went deaf when "a mosquito", "a libido" became labeled as poetry, and 3-chords suffice as the pre-requesite to be called, "a musician". Grab your ADSR by the short ones, lick that Envelope Filter, and GLIDE, brothers! Glide!

A guitar player friend was on my synth, and asked how I got such realistic guitar sounds from a keyboard? "You have to THINK like you're playing guitar." If you think synth, it'll sound synth-y. " Sometimes, it's harder to play synth parts. You need, at least, a fundamental understanding of how the "other" instruments are played..Using pitch/modulation wheels, breath controllers, etc. all add to the synth part being believable.
