And it s waiting there for you and me the nights are cool and i m a fool, where the water s runnin free
Tonight we pray for water, old dan and i with throats burned dry, like me i guess he d like to rest
Keep a-movin, he s a devil not a man
Just one thing more than water, dan s feet are sore he s yearning for Sons, the shadows sway and seem to say
Like me i guess he d like to rest, where the water s runnin free, but with the dawn i ll wake and yawn
but with the dawn i ll wake and yawn
Dan can you see that big green tree, all day i ve faced the barren waste
And souls that cry for water, but with the dawn i ll wake and yawn
tonight we pray for water
dan can you see that big green tree
dan can you see that big green tree
Where the water s runnin free, dan s feet are sore he s yearning for
Each star s a pool of water, just one thing more than water
Dan s feet are sore he s yearning for, like me i guess he d like to rest, tonight we pray for water
Each star s a pool of water, each star s a pool of water Of, and show us where there s water
keep a-movin
keep a-movin
The shadows sway and seem to say, he s a devil not a man, the shadows sway and seem to say
He s a devil not a man, where the water s runnin free
Without the taste of water, he s a devil not a man
Keep a-movin, keep a-movin, all day i ve faced the barren waste
and way up there he ll hear our prayer
keep a-movin
Where the water s runnin free, tonight we pray for water Pioneers, and carry on to water
Don t you listen to him, keep a-movin
but with the dawn i ll wake and yawn
And way up there he ll hear our prayer, tonight we pray for water, where there s no quest for water
Leonard Slye, Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer formed a trio in 1932 and called themselves The Pioneer Trio. In 1936 Slye now known as Roy Rogers went solo. Nolan and Spencer added brothers Hugh and Karl Farr and The Sons of The Pioneers were born. This was the band that appeared in all of the Roy Rogers movies. Bob Nolan wrote many of their biggest hits including "Cool Water" and their signature song " Tumbling Tumbleweeds". Tim Spencer wrote " Room Full of Roses" which Mickey Gilley later covered. There have been many different versions of the Pioneers over the years with the most notable led by Ken Curtis who played Festus Hagen on Gunsmoke.
My Father, Floyd Peters, Who is 88, and is not to be with us for more than 4 months due to prostate canser, calls this his favorite song. I love you daddy......
This brings back my childhood. My dad used to play this record for us. Mind you, it was made way before we were born. This song actually made me thirsty and long for water :)
Wouldn't it be great if the singers of today could learn to blend their sound like this? Instead, it seems they fall over themselves to be heard first. Thank you for playing this!
I'm only in my teens.... But I absolutely love this song.... It makes me think of when my grandpa would play it on long car trips.... Besides.... Their voices are so much nicer than those of today.....
This was one of the few songs that my middle sister could sing the melody unsupported, while our oldest sister and I sang low and high harmony. We sang this for Daddy when he was in the ICU. All the other families came out of their rooms and listened to us. We did that again for him just before he died. Today is the anniversary of his death. I miss my dad.
A familiar song around my home growing up in Hollywood in the 40's and early 50's, of all places. Along with Gene, Roy, Gabby, Blackie, Hoppy Tonto, Red Ryder, Cisco and Pancho, we lived a life that was idyllic. The Hitching Post theatre was a favorite every Saturday. Great times.
