when they march them off to prison
they will go for you and me
for the sake of honesty
who will fight for sanity
here s to all the draft resisters
Who will fight for sanity, of the mighty pentagon
who found peace on swedish ground
When they march em off to prison, will not rob them of the courage, which is wasting precious millions
Which is wasting precious millions, for the sake of honesty, which is wasting precious millions
Will not rob them of the courage, will not rob them of the courage Resister, they will go for you and me
he had joined to seek adventure
Til his conscience ruined their plans, til his conscience ruined their plans, and we thought of those who suffer
And to prove himself a man, who will fight for sanity Steppenwolf, which is wasting precious millions
Heed the threat and awesome power, they will go for you and me
who found peace on swedish ground
traitors to humanity
all those who refuse to follow
don t forget the draft resisters
for the sake of honesty
Who found peace on swedish ground, he was talkin bout the army, who found peace on swedish ground
wrongly placed upon their heads
Will not rob them of the courage, they will go for you and me
when they march them off to prison
Til his conscience ruined their plans, he had joined to seek adventure
Who found peace on swedish ground, but they tried to crush his spirit
Don t forget the draft resisters, will not rob them of the courage
When they march them off to prison, an american deserter, in this land of liberty
When they march them off to prison, for the sake of honesty, disgrace and all dishonor
For the sake of honesty, in this land of liberty Resister, who will fight for sanity
He had joined to seek adventure, and we thought of those who suffer
Of the mighty pentagon, when they march them off to prison Resister, in this land of liberty
They will go for you and me, disgrace and all dishonor, on the toys of washington
who will fight for sanity
I think it's right and healthy that there's been more and more honor paid to Vietnam veterans who were brave enough to put their lives on the line in doing what they thought was their duty to their country. When I saw the graves of German soldiers at the D-Day beaches, I had the same thought. But it's also important to remember that, no matter what courage and dedication were shown by those soldiers, the causes that they fought for were actually racist, horrific, and wrong. And, as Steppenwolf reminds us here, it's also important to remember the courage shown by the Vietnam draft resisters who were not only on the right side of this issue but who also, in many cases, had to wreck their own lives in order to be true to their conscience and convictions. I'd never previously run across this song: thanks very much for uploading it.
i think joan baez said that there are too many love dovey songs and not enough protest songs in the modern era and i would tend to agree we dont need gangsta rap to form political opinions thanks
Apparently every copy of this album wore out the same way ,via the "I can see the shape of the vinyl through the sleeve"? lol. Had a copy that looks exactly the same.
Fyi...some versions of this record had a typo that said "Draft Register" Yikes!
Where is the political descent in todays music? At least back them, someone had the guts to say: "Hey, this is all phuked up, and I'll not have any part in it."
well, this was one rock band that did that. and in an intelligent way; never sounded lame, preachy, or 'dated.' weren't a bunch of burned out friend junkies so all are still very much alive! (not like 'all bands were' but it is a hellacious life and merciless on anyone weak). there were a few besides these guys, but they are the best in rock for this stuff.
Mostly we wanted to end war as an inevitable consequence of humankind, of course we thought we could, such an undertaking can't succeed without optimism and dedication. We also wanted to bring the boys home, I marched with many Vietnam Veterans Against The War, their dedication to the cause was inspiring, these men had seen the worst of mankind and their country that betrayed them, and though they were bent from their horrific experience they refused to break, stood proud and defiant to tell America the truth about what their government had done. I was one of the lucky ones, I only got 18 months and worked in a hospital for 5 years, some of the resisters did the whole 5 year stretch. I'm certain that we shortened the war and saved some lives, but 30 years later the same scenario of government lies invaded Iraq and the cycle repeated again. When will they ever learn!
