Never heard this before but what a great record - when tunes were heartfelt and actually had true meaning behind them.

My favorite song as well. I used to play it on our 45 record player, and still, at age 66, know every word. A powerful song

I was about 5 or 6 when i first heard this song in the early 60s. It was only NOW at this very moment when I listened to the part where he confronts the lumberjack that I realized something I'd never considered before. Before I always thought the the Reverend Mr. Black allowed the lumberjack to hit him twice then knocked him down in self defense, gave him a chance to walk away. But I realize now that he actually stood there and took the blows only to tell him "You have to walk that lonesome valley, you've got to walk it by yourself, Nobody else can walk it for you...." It was his quiet strength  that "knocked him down like a big oak tree", and shamed him for the logger then knew that in front of him stood a REAL man, a man who was trying to walk as Christ walked, a man of quiet courage and faith. Maybe one can can counter the old saying "growing older but no wiser.

As a young man in the military, I came to know a Reverend Black. Of course because of this song we called him Reverend Mr. Black. I will never forget this song or the Reverend. After all he performed my wedding ceremony more than 54 years ago.

I wouldn't say that this is my favorite, but it touches me religiously and emotionally the most.

I was a homesick 10-year old 300 miles from home at overnight camp and got an infected ear swimming in the lake. They had to drive me maybe 75 miles to find a doc to treat me. The 18-year old driving had this on in the car, and I felt a sinking sad feeling when the chorus came on. I think it was then that I unconsciously found out that music can reflect all of our emotions. Man, I'll never forget that car ride cuz of this song.

...there is an old saying, quoted by many,"....alone you are born, alone you go through life, and alone you die....and if you get to meet a true friend along the way, then count it a gift..for it is rare......"

The Trio really did a great job of Billy Ed Wheeler's tune! They really like Billy Ed's songs, but then again don't we all!

I had this 45 when i was young, and it was always one of my favorites!  Haven't heard it in years (I'm 62 now), but had no trouble finding it when the chorus popped into my head this morning.  Always a classic.  Thanks KT.
